International and public schools

International schools

There are international schools in Aarhus, Copenhagen, Odense, Viborg and Roskilde, where children are taught in English or another major language. Most international schools operate according to the rules for private schools and receive a state subsidy. Tuition fees apply, ranging from DKK 15,000 to 80,000 annually.

Students at the international schools include both Danish children who wish to be taught in a foreign language and foreign students who do not speak Danish. Even though the teaching at these schools is carried out in a foreign language, non-Danish students typically receive supplemental instruction in the Danish language and culture.

Target group

Primary and lower secondary level (age 6-16 years).

Child benefits and student sponsorship

Eligibility for child benefits for children under 18 years

EU/EEA citizens

Non-EU/EEA citizens

Non EU/EEA citizens are entitled to a percentage of the child benefit proportional to the time they have been in Denmark.

Child benefit rates

The rates vary according to whether you have lived in Denmark for 6 months, 1 year, 1½ years or 2 years.

The quarterly fee per child is DKK 4470 for 0-2 year-olds, falling to 2784 DKK for 7-17 year-old children (2016 level).
