Danish courses and language schools for international academic staff at Aarhus University

As an international with an official Danish address (folkeregisteradresse) you can take state supported Danish courses in your residing municipality. The courses are both for you and your accompanying partner and take place either at the language school or on Aarhus University campus.

Language schools with courses for AU staff

A2B, Lærdansk and CLAVIS offer state supported Danish courses for AU staff. You can take courses in Aarhus, Emdrup, Foulum, Herning, Roskilde, Risø and Silkeborg. The Aarhus University courses are for international academic staff, guest researchers and accompanying partners and they take place either on campus or via a virtual classroom.

We recommend you to contact each language school to enquire about the next course and location to find the right option for you.

The courses are at a cost and usually you must pay for the courses yourself. However, some departments offer to pay for staff members, especially if you have a teaching obligation in Danish. The university is not allowed to pay for courses for accompanying partners. Contact your department secretary to hear whether your department offers to pay for your Danish course.

A2B is specialized in teaching Danish to highly educated professionals and you will experience a Danish course customized and tailored for your work life and everyday life at the university and in Denmark.

The state supported Danish courses consists of six modules, and each module is finished with a test. You have 5 years to take the six modules. There are certain rules if you for example wish to take breaks in the middle of a module or in between modules. Therefore, it is essential that you familiarise yourself thoroughly with all aspects of the system, in order to understand the consequences of the choices you make. The language school will tell you more about this.

Participants fee

You must pay to take the state supported Danish education and one module of Danish language lessons costs DKK 2.000. You also need to pay a deposit of DKK 1.250 when you sign up for Danish language classes – but this deposit is fully refundable. When you sign up, you will receive a referral letter from the municipality in which you live, please contact your preferred language school as soon as possible when you receive this.
